What's so healthy about eating fish?
Fish is a high-protein, low-fat food that provides a range of health benefits. White-fleshed fish, in particular, is lower in fat than any other source of animal protein, and oilier fish contain substantial quantities of omega-3s, or the "good" fats in the human diet. In addition, fish does not contain the "bad" fats commonly found in red meat -- called omega-6 fatty acids.
What kind of fish are used to make fish sticks, fish sandwiches and imitation crab (surimi)?
These products are usually made from a white fish called Pacific pollock, which is caught primarily in the waters off Alaska. This is the single largest fishery in the United States with annual catches of over three billion pounds. Although this fishery is well managed, some experts are concerned that the fishery reduces the amount of food available to endangered Steller sea lions.
